On a trip across the southern States, I encountered this plant in the Chihuahuan Desert. At the time, I was told it was called a "Fire Whip" due to its spindly look with a firey inflorescence at the tip. I was enchanted. It turns out the name "Ocotillo" comes from the word "ocotl" meaning "torch" in the Nahualt language.
